Kathmandu, July 22 (RSS): Nepal Women Association, sister wing of Nepali Congress (NC), has underscored the need to increase women’s participation in the party.
At a seminar organized here today on the 36th Memorial Day of BP Koirala, one of the founding members of NC, the participations voiced for the same.
Speaking at the event, NC’s senior leader Ramchandra Poudel reminisced of Dwarika Devi Thakurani, the first female minister of the country and spoke of the need for increasing women’s participation at every level in the party.
He viewed that BP Koirala respected and promoted women by entrusting Thakurani with that responsibility.
Similarly, NC’s General Secretary Dr Shashank Koirala , who is also the son of BP Koirala, shared that BP Koirala always batted for women empowerment.
Confessing that the NC had not been able to give due recognition to the women contributing to the party he committed that the party would mull something substantial towards this end soon.
Stating that he got elected to the post of General Secretary due to the overwhelming votes of women cadres, Koirala vowed to work towards gender advancement within the party.
Likewise, NC’s Treasurer Sitadevi Yadav lauded the increasing number of women in the NC and the parliament. She commended the contributions of the foreladies in the party as Mangala Devi Singh, Nona Koirala, Sailaja Acharya among others for advancing the cause of gender in the party.
Leader Ram Sharan Mahat reminded that it was NC who demanded at least one-third participation of women in the parliament.
NWA Chair for Kathmandu Chapter Bishnu Devi Pudasaini, Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi ‘Shrestha’, former General Secretary of NWA Pratima Gautam among others univocally demanded 50 per cent of women’s participation in the party.
On the occasion, former President of NWA Meena Pandey, Ambika Basnet and sitting President Uma Regmi were honoured.
