Drunk driving prevention campaign on, 439 licenses suspended

Kathmandu, July 31  ,,  The Transport Management Office has so far suspended 439 driving licenses for violating the anti-drunk driving rules more than five times. The decision was taken on the recommendation of the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division Office. Traffic police has intensified the action against drunk driving as a campaign since December 3, 2011. During this period 19,690 drivers faced music for breaching the rule. Any driver caught violating the rule more than five times will be liable for getting the license suspended and it will be proved through the license punching system that is in force since 2068 BS. Traffic police is authorized to punch a driving license of the violator every time. According to division chief and Senior Superintendent of Police Basanta Kumar Pant, lately the cases of drunk driving in the Kathmandu Valley have lessened. In fiscal year 2074/75 BS, 22,226 drivers faced the action and this number was 21,973 last fiscal year. The violator is fined Rs 1,000 and has to compulsorily attend the awareness class. The Division had decided to go on with the drunk driving prevention efforts as a campaign as it was found to be one of the major factors behind growing road accidents and fatalities.
