Six killed, five missing in Gulmi landslide

Butwal, July 23  ,,  Six people were killed after a landslide buried them at Satyawati rural municipality in Gulmi district. Two persons of a single family were killed at Satyawati rural municipality-3 and four others lost their life when the landslide buried three houses at Satyawati rural municipality-4. Five people are missing in the landslide triggered by incessant rain since last night. The mudslide that occurred at the rural municipality-4 damaged three houses at a Dalit settlement in the area, rural municipality’s ward number 4 mamber Dilliraj Bhattarai said. “It is difficult to recognize the bodies of the victims as they have been mutilated. The body parts of the victims have been severed from the body while the heads of some have been squeezed,” Bhattarai said on the phone. Chief District Officer Yadunath Poudel said 34-year-old Til Kumari Taramu and her son Darshan Taramu, 9, lost their lives at the rural municipality’s Ward Number 3 while the bodies of Hemanta BK, Pankhu BK, Anjali BK and Chhali BK have been retrieved from the debris at Ward Number 4. Their bodies have been retrieved with the help of the locals and the police. Five people have been still missing in the landslide and a search is on for them, according to CDO Poudel. The landslide is said to be continuing and all the people in the locality have been taking shelter at a nearby school, he said. He said a rescue team comprising personnel of Nepal Police, the Nepal Army and the Armed Police Force will reach the incident site after some time due to the remoteness of the place. Rural municipality chairman Parishwar Dhakal said rescue work is hampered by the continuous rain and travel to the incident site has become difficult as the road leading to the locality has collapsed at various places.
